How long does dental implant treatment take?

It can take about half a year for an adult tooth to take root in the jawbone and emerge through the gums and into the mouth. So, how long does it take a dentist to complete the same process with a dental implant? Turns out, it takes the roughly the same about of time.

Much of that time involves giving the jawbone time to heal and fuse with the dental implant. Here’s what else you and your dentist will do over the course of the time it takes your dental implant to integrate into your mouth.

The Groundwork

It all starts with a consultation with your dentist. During the initial consultation, your dentist will answer all your questions about dental implants, set expectations and determine if dental implants are right for you. If necessary, your dentist will also talk to you about supporting procedures you may need in order for the whole process to be a success.

If you and your dentist determine implants are right for you, you’ll have impressions and 3D scans of your teeth taken at your next appointment.

This stage can be completed in a matter of weeks or even days, depending on scheduling and availability.

Implant Surgery

Typically, you can have your titanium implant post placed during one visit – your dentist will likely be capable of handling it all in one visit, even if you need multiple implants. During the implanting processes, you’ll be given a local anesthetic to ensure any discomfort is minimal.

After surgery, your dentist will set you up with aftercare instructions and medications to help you both manage any pain and keep the implant site as free from bacteria as possible.

The Ribbon Cutting

It’ll take several months of healing, at least, though the time your implant takes to heal will depend on your current health.

Once healed, you’ll pay another visit to the dentist. And if everything looks all healed and healthy, you’ll get the abutment and dental crown to cap of your treatment.
